TROY, Alabama – After a dominating weekend in which Troy won both road conference games, Jordon Varnado was named Sun Belt Player of the Week the conference announced on Tuesday.
Â
Varnado set personal records and school records alike in the two wins over UL Lafayette and ULM on Saturday and Monday, respectively.
Â
In the Trojans 100-88 win over the Ragin' Cajuns, Varnado set two Troy Division I school records by converting 15 free throws on 18 free throw attempts. These totals were part of a night in which the forward had a career-high 31 points on 8-14 shooting from the floor. It was the first time he has scored 30 or more in a game in his career.
Â
In that same contest, Varnado added six rebounds, three assists, one block and did not commit a single turnover in the game. His outpouring helped Troy score 100 points in a conference game for the first time since Mar. 3, 2006 against Arkansas State.
Â
The Brownsville, Tenn. native's performance on Saturday carried over to Monday when Varnado led all scorers with 23 points on 10-19 shooting. The 10 field goals marked the third time this season he has matched that total, which is just one off his career-high.
Â
On top of the 23 points, the forward added 13 rebounds—five of which were offensive—to notch the ninth double-double of his career and the fourth this season. He also tied his career-high for the ninth time with three blocks.
Â
Troy's win over UL Lafayette was the first win against the Ragin' Cajuns since Feb. 2, 2013 and the first win in the Cajundome since Feb. 26, 2009. The win over ULM on a late 3-pointer by Kevin Baker was Troy's first overtime victory since Dec. 2, 2013 against Alcorn State.
