Trojans Offense Explodes in 12-9 Win

NEW ORLEANS, La. – In the true spirit of Mardis Gras, the Trojans scored 12 runs in a hit parade to win the first game of the series with New Orleans (5-1).
Despite falling behind 6-2 after two innings, Troy (3-2) responded with an explosion of hits – sparked by a five-run third inning. Brody Binder continued adding to his power numbers with a three-run bomb. Matt Sanders scored three times and drove in two more in a 3-for-4 performance while, Joey Denison got three hits in five at-bats – and added a double and an RBI.
Corey Childress (0-1, 12.71) started the game for the Trojans, but was relieved after some early trouble by Daren Osby. Osby (1-1, 5.06) got his first career win and picked up five strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work – allowing three runs on seven hits.
The Trojans handed the Privateers, who beat No. 2 LSU earlier this week, their first loss of the season. Owen Magee led the squad – going 3-for-5 with two home runs. William Griffin (1-1) picked up the loss while giving up three runs on three hits and a walk in an inning of work.
NOTEWORTHY
• Steven Whitaker stole four bases – stealing third twice – which is the most by any Troy player in a game since Adam Godwin in 2005.
• Brody Binder went deep for the second game in a row – the first Trojan to do so since Justin Friend last season.
• The Trojans overcame an early four-run deficit to win for the first time since May 2012 against UL-Lafayette.
QUOTABLE
"It was a great win for us," Troy head coach Mark Smartt said. "They were a powerful hitting team, probably the best we've seen since we played Arizona State years ago. We fell behind early but got great at bats in the third inning and hung on from there. It's always great to get a quality win from behind."
WHAT'S NEXT
Game 2 of the series will start at 12 p.m. tomorrow. The Trojans will send Louisiana-native Evan Hebert (1-0, 1.59) to the mound to face LHP Bryan Warzek (1-0, 0.00).
