BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Troy indoor track and field finished competition at the Jaguar Invitational in Birmingham Sunday.
The Trojans once again had an impressive performance with 10 top eight finishes, this time amid five conference rivals.
The men finished their last indoor appearance of the season on a high note. Hakim Montgomery continued his winning ways with yet another first place finish in the 60-meter dash with a meet record 6.69-second time. He has now won all six 60-meter races that he has competed in this season.
Michael Alvernaz broke his own school record with a 19.09-meter weight throw and won the event for the second weekend in a row. Tyson Robinson finished second in the 800-meter dash and the men's 4x400-meter relay team finished fifth.
On the women's side, Sara Zylstra finished fourth in the 5000-meter run and Niata Alexander had a sixth place finish in the 200-meter dash. Allison Taylor had a personal best weight throw for the second straight week with a 17.31-meter toss, which was good enough to place seventh.
To recognize their performances at the meet, Michael Alvernaz and Allison Taylor were named the "Champions of the Meet" by the coaching staff.
QUOTABLE
"We had some very good performances today," said head coach Marc Davis. "Hakim continued his undefeated season, and Mike and Ali continued their successes in the weight throw. We had six more personal bests on the day. For the women, we have another meet next week before we go to the Sun Belt Championships. While we had some good performances, we still have some work to do. We have a handful of league scorers on the team. The rest are very young newcomers that are still learning the college level of competition. The final two weeks of sharpening will be critical to our success."
The women's team will return to the Birmingham CrossPlex Friday to compete in the Samford Open, the last indoor meet before the Sun Belt Championship.
