3/5/2017 5:17:00 PM | Basketball (M)
TROY, Alabama – The bracket for the 2016-17 Sun Belt Men's basketball tournament is now finalized with Troy facing Appalachian State in the first round on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, La.
Â
Troy (18-14, 10-8) earned the sixth seed in the tournament after winning four of the final six games. The Trojans most recently closed out the regular season on Saturday with a 57-54 comeback win against Little Rock on senior day.
Â
The 18 wins in regular season play was a nine-game improvement from the 2015-16 season. That margin represents the largest improvement between seasons since Troy improved by 12 games in the 1987-88 season.
Â
That wasn't the only achievement in the regular season as the 10 wins in Sun Belt play was the third-most Troy has had since joining the conference. The Trojans defeated all but two Sun Belt opponents and beat five of the six top seeds.
Â
Troy and Appalachian State (9-20, 4-14) met one time this season at Trojan Arena on Feb. 20. Troy came away with the 76-66 win in that game behind 21 points and 12 rebounds from Jordon Varnado.
Â
If the Trojans win the first-round matchup, the next opponent will be the three-seed Georgia Southern on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Troy and Georgia Southern split the home-and-home series this season.
