Cory Gill Named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week

TROY, Alabama – Troy sophomore right-hander Cory Gill has been named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week, Collegiate Baseball announced Monday. Gill dominated opposing hitters last week as he struck out 12 batters in just six innings of work without allowing a run.

The Cottonwood, Ala., picked up a hold in Troy's victory at No. 5 Auburn last Tuesday and then turned around to record his fifth save of the year in the Trojans' victory at defending national champion Coastal Carolina on Friday.

Gill has struck out four consecutive batters in three straight outings and has struck out 23 batters over his last six appearances and 11.1 innings of work.

Against Auburn, Gill surrendered a leadoff single and then retired eight straight batters – six via the strikeout – before turning the ball over to Marc Skinner to close out the Tigers. It was the highest-ranked opponent that Troy has defeated at the Division I level.

Gill recorded a three-inning save at Coastal Carolina as he allowed just a pair of base runners – walk & hit by pitch – and retired seven straight at one point as Troy would win the series opener by a 4-0 margin.

He becomes the second Trojan this season to earn Louisville Slugger honors as Austin Crook was recognized after he struck out 14 over 8.2 innings against No. 15 UL Lafayette earlier in the season. Troy has had at least one Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week in seven of the past eight seasons.
