SUGAR GROVE, Illinois – Troy senior Cam Norman fired a 5-over 77 in Sunday's third round of the NCAA Men's Golf Championship at Rich Harvest Farms and made the cut for Monday's final round of competition. Norman is tied for 36th place overall and just five shots out of the top 10.
The top 15 teams and top nine individuals not on qualifying teams made the cut to play on Monday. Norman tied for the final individual spot with Wake Forest's Will Zalatoris, the nation's fourth-ranked player. However, Norman earned the berth into the final round based on the NCAA's tiebreaker protocol – both players posted the same final round score and Norman's second round (68) topped Zalatoris' (70), which gave him the nod.
Norman will be the first one on the course Monday as his paring is scheduled for the first tee box at 11:40 a.m.; he will play alongside Arizona State's Chun An Yu and Alex Del Rey Gonzalez. Golf Channel will have live coverage of the final round beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Norman, a native of Greenville, Ala., pulled within one shot of the individual lead early in the day after a birdie on the 562-yard, par-5 No. 2; Norman has played the par-5 holes to a mark of 3-under through the first 54 holes of the tournament.
A birdie on No. 5 pushed Norman's card to 2-under and placed him in sole possession of second place. However, his luck took a turn and Norman carded bogeys on the next two holes and made the turn even. He then posted a bogey on four of his first six holes on the back nine and ran his card to 6-over with a double-bogey on the 17th.
Playing in the morning wave, Norman had no idea what score the cutline would settle on. Facing the 525-yard, par-5 18th, Norman's third shot settled about 60 feet from the pin on the opposite side of the green. At 1:30 p.m., he rolled the length of the green for birdie … he found out almost six hours later at 7:22 p.m. that his final birdie of the day was the difference between going home and playing on Monday.
