TAMPA, Florida – South Florida capitalized on what few first half opportunities it produced with two goals in the first 45 minutes to drop Troy, 2-0, in an exhibition on Saturday at Corbett Stadium.
Eight Trojans made their unofficial debuts in the game as 21 players saw action. Troy managed four shots on the day, two on target, while South Florida got off 10 shots, five on frame. Sophie Wilson and Alison Watkins saw shots saved while Nicole Strahl fired one wide and Emily Stearns had her shot blocked.
The Bulls opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Yasmine Hall drove down the right flank and found Evelyne Viens, who slotted it past Mikki Lewis to open the scoring. Leah Ferlin scored her second goal in as many games with a 40th minute goal assisted by Kylee Burroughs.
Troy opens the 2017 regular season at the Troy Soccer Complex on Friday, August 18 at 7 p.m. against Mercer. It will be just the second time in the last five years that the Trojans have kicked off a season at home.
QUOTABLE
"Overall, it was a great team effort by a young team still getting to know one other and getting to know how we want them to play," head coach Ged O'Connor said. "We played a good USF team that will win many games this year. There was a lot that we can take from this game and learn from moving forward."
