For many parents, sending the youngest child off to college usually brings about empty nest syndrome and a quiet void around the house for the first few months. However, for Tim Evans and his wife, Patti, sending their son, Joe, off to Troy brought a whole new family into their lives- the Trojan family.
The Evans never lived in Troy, but they have experienced the love and passion for the Trojans from their home in Alabaster, Ala. In fact, they consider Troy to be their second home. Both Tim and Patti are graduates of Samford University in Birmingham. The quad even features a brick with their names and the words "Adopted Trojans" on it next to the fountain.
Even after their son graduated in 2008, the Evans remained loyal to Troy. After Joe's first year at Troy, the Evans became season ticket holders. They began attending football games in 2003 and have since been to over 100 games. As the years went on, they began traveling across the southeast to attend away games as well.
"We visited Troy during the 2003 football season when we were searching for a university for our youngest child, Joe," Tim said. "Needless to say, we fell in love with the campus and the people. Joe graduated in 2008 and we have never left."
One of the most memorable games for Tim and Patti since They became "adopted Trojans" is Troy's 2004 comeback win over Missouri.
"It was our first season to have tickets and we were bringing other family members from out of state to the game," Tim said. "Traffic on George Wallace was backed up to Highway 231. When we finally entered the stadium, Missouri was already winning 14 – 0. In the second quarter, Troy began making their move. In one of the most memorable plays of the modern era, lineman Junior Louissaint picked up the ball and ran for a touchdown."
Tim enters his 34th year as an educator, currently serving as the science department chair at Oak Mountain High School in Birmingham. While many educators use their summers to travel, the Evans always saved up for the fall to attend Troy football games. Their one trip during this past summer came at the very end of July when Tim and Patti took a trip to Troy to catch the first two practices of fall camp.
With the help of social media, Tim and Patti are able to follow other sports at Troy as well. They are also avid basketball fans and enjoy Troy soccer and baseball. While their travel is sometimes limited, the Evans try to make it to as many Troy Athletics events as possible.
"My favorite explanation of why we support Troy came from a former player. He once stated during a conversation with us, 'Troy is a small size campus with a big school atmosphere'.
We personally enjoy supporting Troy because we feel like we can make a difference, where some of the other Division I programs, you are just a body or a number. Troy Athletics is a family."
The Evans encourage all of those fans or potential students that are on the fence about coming to Troy or supporting the Trojans to just try it out. Once you do, falling in love with this university is inevitable.
