Troy Volleyball Set for 2017 Home Opener

TROY, Alabama- The Troy volleyball team will host the Toy Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 1 and 2, at the Trojans Arena. Troy (0-4) will face Northwestern State on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and will close out the tournament on Saturday against Winthrop and Jackson State at 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

After coming up just short at the South Carolina Gamecock Invitational and against Kennesaw State last weekend, the Trojans look to notch their first win of the season on their home court. Troy leads its opponents in kills (184), assists (171) and service aces (26), but has struggled to control the tempo for the entire match.

Sophomore Belle Waldrop has had a strong start this season as she has posted a team-high 48 kills averaging 3.00 kills/set. Freshman Cheyenne Hayes has been impressive in her first year as a Trojan as she and sophomore Kiara Barrett each tallied seven service aces.

Troy looks to improve on 3-2 series lead against Northwestern State. The Demons travel to Troy 1-3 on the season. Last year, they finished with a 12-20 record, sixth in the Southland conference. Junior Reagan Rogers is leading the campaign for the Demons this season with 36 kills and 43.0 points in Northwestern State's first four matches.

The Trojans look to even the series at 2-2 with Winthrop after the Eagles defeated the Trojans in 2014. Winthrop is 1-3 this season with its lone win coming against Delaware State. The Eagles are led by senior Keaupono Fey with 43 kills and 14 total blocks.

Jackson State is 0-4 all time against Troy. The Tigers enter the Troy Invitational with a 1-2 record as they defeated Nicholls State, but fell to Little Rock and Southern Miss. Freshman Camry Dabney was named SWAC Newcomer of the Week with 30 kills and 29 digs in the Tigers' first three matches of the season. Â

NOTEWORTHY
- Waldrop was named to the Gamecock Invitational All-tournament team after her performance against North Florida, South Carolina and Mercer last weekend.
- Defensively, sophomore Bethany Cullity has played majority of the sets for Troy at the libero position. She leads the Trojans with 44 digs, 2.75 per set. Freshman SaraGrace Wilson has also made an appearance as libero and has contributed 25 digs, 1.56 per set.
- Senior Reina Terry returns as the team's assist leader as she has 2208 career assists to rank her seventh all-time in the Troy record books.
