TROY, Alabama – The new-look Troy men's golf team opens its 2017-18 season this weekend at one of the premier tournaments in the country, as the Trojans travel to Rocky Face, Ga., for the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm.
Â
The 15-team field includes six teams in the top 25 and 10 teams in the top 50 in the final Golfstat rankings from last season. Troy finished the 2016-17 season ranked 59th nationally after advancing to its third straight NCAA Regional appearance.
Â
The Trojans will be rolling out an almost new lineup as four of Troy's top five golfers from last season exhausted their eligibility. Additionally, former Troy head women's golf coach Bart Barnes begins his first season as the men's head coach.
Â
"This is going to be one of the top five fields in the country when it's all said and done, and it's more difficult than what we faced in the NCAA Regional last season," Barnes said. "These are the teams that we want to be competing with come April, May and June, so it's better to see them now so our guys know where we need to be at the end of the year."
Â
Junior Calum Masters is the lone holdover from Troy's every day lineup last season. The Headland, Ala., native posted a 74.06 stroke average last season with four rounds under par and three in the 60s.
Â
"We'll be looking for Calum to give us some leadership this season," Barnes said. "I'm still learning this team and they are still learning me and the way I want them to do things on the course. It is evident watching them on the course that there is a lot of talent and ability in this group."
Â
The remainder of Barnes' lineup for the season-opening event will feature junior Dean Martin, a transfer from Wayland Baptist, and freshmen Mac Murphy, Ike Alexander and Connor Futrell.
Â
"This is an exciting time for me and our program," Barnes said. "With an almost new roster and me as a new coach, we can start fresh and start our own path. I definitely have some butterflies going into this weekend, much like I did four years ago when I took over the women's program. I'm looking forward to this week and seeing these guys compete."
