MONROE, La. – Wesley Person broke the all-time scoring record at Troy of 1,875 points but his record-setting night was not highlighted by a win as the Trojans went cold in the second half in a 76-71 loss at ULM.
Leading 38-24 at half, Troy (9-12, 3-5) seemed to be in clear control of a second-consecutive victory after the frontcourt of Alex Hicks and Jordon Varnado had scored at will with 23 points between the two in the opening frame.
Instead, the Warhawks (8-11, 2-6) had other plans as ULM seemingly could not miss in the final 20. After hitting just nine shots in the first half and shooting 27.3 percent (9-33), ULM nearly doubled that up in the second half by hitting 50 percent on 15-30 shooting.
Despite the run from the home squad, Troy trailed 63-61 after Person hit a 3-pointer with 4:40 remaining. That, however, proved to be as close as it would get as ULM responded with a 10-0 run over the next 2:27 of play.
The Trojans were just 3-18 (16.7 percent) from three and 9-30 (30 percent) from the floor in the second half. Person tied for a game-high with 22 points on 7-17 shooting.
QUOTABLE
"They decided at halftime that they had to do something drastic to get back into the game," head coach Phil Cunningham said. "What they did is they went to a small lineup and said, 'We're not going to let you score inside and we're going to make you hit threes in spots.'
"They made us spread out, play off the dribble and shoot threes and it didn't go well for us. We went 3-18 on threes in the second half. We had great looks, but they were doubling us and we were kicking it out. You have to step up and make shots and we didn't."
UP NEXT
Troy will stay in Louisiana with a matchup against conference-leader UL Lafayette on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Cajundome.
NOTEWORTHY
• Person surpassed Anthony Reed's record of 1,875 that was set from 1986-1990.
• Alex Hicks recorded his fifth double-double in the past seven games with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
• Troy had a 25-16 advantage in rebounding in the first half, but ULM ultimately won the rebound battle 42-40.
