TROY, Alabama – The Troy men's golf team returns to the course this weekend for the first time since October as the Trojans open their spring schedule at the SunTrust Gator Invitational hosted by Florida at the Mark Bostick Golf Course.
A field featuring six top-35 teams awaits the Trojans in Gainesville, including No. 5 Vanderbilt and No. 6 Florida. Troy will get an early spring look at a pair of league foes as Georgia Southern and Coastal Carolina will also make the trip to the Gator Invitational.
"We're in a great tournament that traditionally has a strong field and this year is no different from top to bottom," Troy head coach Bart Barnes said. "For us, it's a really good starting spot to the spring to show some of the strides we've been working on in the offseason."
Junior Calum Masters led Troy with a 74.50 stroke average in the fall with a pair of top-25 finishes in Troy's four events. Masters along with freshman Ike Alexander had a team-high 91.7 percent of their rounds (11-of-12) count towards the team card in the fall; Alexander finished with a 75.83 stroke average.
Barnes will also turn to junior Dean Martin (76.11), sophomore Jake Tiffin (77.17) and freshman Fannar Ingi Steingrimsson (80.33) to open the spring campaign.
"We had a long break and I think with us being such a young team that was a good thing," Barnes said. "It helped us get know each other as a team better and really focus our practice sessions."
Teams will play 36 holes on Saturday beginning at 7 a.m. (CT). Troy opens Saturday's shotgun start on the final three holes of the course and the Trojans will be paired with the individuals.
