MACON, Ga. – Leanna Johnson struck out a season-high 13, and Jade Sinness had three hits to lead Troy to an 8-3 victory at Mercer Wednesday in the Trojans' first road game of the year.
Johnson (5-1) didn't allow a run in 6.1 innings of four-hit ball, issuing just a pair of walks to go with her 13 strikeouts. The senior right-hander is now just 12 wins away from being Troy's all-time leader in the category after she pitched the first five innings of the game before reentering with two outs in the sixth inning to close it out after the Bears scored three.
Troy (7-3) jumped out to a 6-0 lead thanks to a five-spot in the fourth inning and one in the fifth; the Bears (4-6) scored their only three runs of the game in the sixth inning.
Sinness went 3-for-5 from the plate, including driving in a pair of important insurance runs with the bases loaded in the seventh inning plus scoring twice. She scored Troy's first run after ripping her third double of the season and coming around on an Anslee Finch double to open the 4-run fourth.
Kelly Horne added an RBI grounder in the fourth after Libby Baker singled and pinch runner Emma Grace Walker stole second. Audra Thompson made it 3-0 Trojans with a bunt single to plate a run, and Taylor McKinney continued her torrid start to the season with a 2-run single to cap the crooked inning for the Trojans.
Troy kept the pressure on in the fifth, loading the bases on a leadoff single from Sinness, a Baker hit by pitch and an Aayanah Hughes walk. Thompson followed with a walk to plate the first run of the frame, and Katelynn de Leon walked later in the inning to put the Trojans in front 6-0.
Grace Taylor was charged with the loss for the Bears after she allowed five runs on five hits in 3.2 innings of work. Rebeca Laudino and Kylie Helm each had two hits to pace Mercer at the plate.
Troy travels to Tallahassee, Fla., this weekend for the Unconquered Softball Invitational hosted by Florida State.
