Â
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Troy took advantage of two Army errors and seven walks to defeat the Black Knights, 7-1, in the Trojans' opener of the UNF Spring Break Challenge at the UNF Softball Complex. Troy's second game of the day against Northern Kentucky was canceled due to rain.
Â
The Trojans (16-7), who won for the sixth time in their last seven games, raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first and iced the game with a 5-run fourth inning.
Â
Taylor McKinney led Troy's offensive attack reaching base in all four of her plate appearances with a pair of singles and two walks, while Leanna Johnson and Haley Pittman combined to limit the Army offense to just three hits. The Trojans were active on the base paths stealing four bases, with Jade Sinness' two leading the way.
Â
Libby Baker put the Trojans on the board with a sac fly in the first, and McKinney scored on an error by the Black Knights after Sinness stole second.
Â
Army (6-14) cut the deficit in half in the third after a two-out walk and an RBI double by Kayla Edwards to right-center field.
Â
The Trojans answered right back in their half of the fourth inning after loading the bases with nobody out. Audra Thompson plated the first run with a grounder to second, and Kennedi Gaton followed with an RBI single back up the middle to put the Trojans up 4-1.
Â
Emma Grace Walker drew a walk to plate another run, D'Aun Riggs grounded to second to score Thompson, and Anslee Finch capped the scoring with a sac fly.
Â
Johnson (12-2) tossed the opening four frames and held Army to a run on two hits with a strikeout and a walk to earn her 12th win of the season, leaving her five shy of Troy's all-time wins record. Pittman had her most effective outing in a Troy uniform, tossing three scoreless frames with three strikeouts and just one hit to earn the save.
Â
Amanda Eaglin (1-2) was charged with the loss for Army after allowing seven runs – six earned – on four hits in three innings.
Â
Troy returns to action Saturday, weather permitting, against Army at noon and Northern Kentucky at 2 p.m.
