Â
TROY, Ala. – Mady Volpe tossed a 1-hitter, and Riley Zana had three hits as Coastal Carolina defeated Troy, 4-0, Friday afternoon to avoid a sweep in the Sun Belt Conference series finale at the Troy Softball Complex.
Â
The Chanticleers (28-13, 6-6 SBC) scored three runs in the fourth inning after the first two batters of the frame were retired. Back-to-back singles kept the inning alive, and Diamond Williams delivered the big blow with a two-strike double to the gap in right-center to plate two runs. Zana followed with another double to put the Chats up 3-0.
Â
Troy (28-10-1, 9-2-1), which won its fourth straight Sun Belt series to open the season, had a prime opportunity to tie the game in the fifth after walks to Kelly Horne and Sissy Dunn around an Audra Thompson single loaded the bases. Taylor McKinney flared a pop up behind second base, but Zana made an acrobatic catch to end the frame.
Â
Coastal added an unearned run in the sixth after a fielding error allowed Williams to reach, and a throwing error allowed her to score.
Â
Volpe (8-1) picked up the win in the circle for Coastal, allowing just the one hit while striking out six and pitching around five walks. Leanna Johnson (21-4) suffered just her fourth loss of the season, allowing three runs on seven hits in four innings.
Â
Troy travels to No. 19 Auburn on Wednesday for a non-conference before traveling to James Madison over the weekend in league play.
